SWIMMING.

THE PINAL CARNIVAL. On Thursday evening, in tho Municipal Baths, tlie final carnival in connection with New Plymouth Amateur Swimming Club was held. The attendance of the public was only fair, and the excellent programme submitted was certainly worthy of a better response. The events decided filled fairly well, hut the life-saving, and bellman’s huff were cut out of the programme. ’The best performance of the evening was put up by Claringbold. In the 2()oyds. open handicap, -he gave away 49sec. and then he won comfortably. The handicapping was in the capable hands of Air. Lints. Mr. Bennett was,timekeeper,- and Air. Aloyes; assisted by Air. 'Balliam, starter. Air. Morris, custodian of the baths, rendered valuable assistance to the club. Air.. Tabor, the popular secretary, and his various other officials, worked hard and successfully. Tho Taranaki Garrison Band contributed largely to the enjoyment of the evening, rendering an excellent programme of music. The Williams’ A 1 emor ial. the first heat of which was decided during the evening, is spread over three distances —66vds., 100yds., and 200yds.—points to count; 3 for a win, 2 for second, and 1 for third. K. Stohr, Bacon and Alasters in that order filled the places on Thursday evening. The remaining two distances' will probably be swum next week at club practices. Following are the results of the various events:— 'Williams’ Alemorial.—66yds.: K. Stohr (6sec.) 1, Bacon (4sec.) 2, Masters (scr.) 3. Also started: Newell. Stohr soon caught Newell, and the pair turned first. Bacon then closed on Stohr, Newel! having fallen back. Masters made an endeavour to catch them, hut could not make up the ground. Stohr finished half-a-yard in front of Bacon. Time, 48sec. Girls 33yds.: H. Rollo (6seo.) 1, H. Jnrv, (4see.) 2. Aliss Hollo won by a couple of yards. Eight others also swam. Time, 32 l-ssec. High School Boys’ Race.—l6oyds.; Goss (2sec.) 1, S) Ewing (scr.) 2, Pott (4soc.) 3. Goss had the race well in hand right through and .won fairly easily. Nino others also swam. Time, Imin, 4usec. . 1

Drown (scr.), Goss (4sec.) and Newell (Bsec.) also started. Bowio got round quickest, Stohr following close behind. A great race ensued, Bowie just winning on the post. Time, 37)soc. Second heat; S. Okev (Bsec.) 1. K. Stohr (Gsec.) 2. B. Stohr (scr.) and W'AlUini (Gsec.) also started. Won by a yard. B. Stohr found his handicap too big. .1 ime, do sec. Third heal; Whitaker (Bsec.) 1, Hart (Gsec.) 2. ' Wasters' (scr.), S. Hawke (4sec.), and Bacon (4sec.) also swam. Whitaker was never caught, and ho won bv a yard. Time, 35 2-ssec. The winner won easily. Time, limn. lO.sec. Wen’s Diving.—B. Stohr 1, S. Ewing 2. Five others dived. Ewing had to dive off with J. Stohr several times before lie secured the verdict for second place. XQOyds. Open.—First heat: Bacon (.6 sec.) T, Laing (scr.) 2. Also started; Brown (scr.), S. Hawko (Ssec.), tv. Stohr (Msec.). J. Stohr (12sec.), Newell (ISsec.). K. Stohr did not finish. Bacon won very comfortably by about oyds. The two scratch men kept together throughout, but on the post idling touched ahead of Brown. 'Time, Imiii. 26see. Second heat; Whitaker (XBsee.) Bohn neatly won from her sister'in the finish. Balloon Race, one length.—B. Stohr X, K. Stohr 2. Two others started. Wneh merriment was provoked in this item. The antics of some of the swimaiors in trying to send their balloons along were very amusing. The balloons would persist in going in any direction but ahead. 200yds. Open.—Claringbold _ (llsec. behind) 1, 'Wasters (scr.) 2. Iv. Stohr 3. Whitaker (3Ssec.) also swam. Claringbold, despite bis big handicap, caught the field after about 130yds. had been traversed and then going easy won as he liked. Wasters just beat Stohr for second honours. Time, 3min. User.

The points prize, presented by*the Rovers Cycle Club for the highest points in the 50yds., 100yds.', and 200, yds. open handicaps, was won by W. Whitaker.
