PALMERSTON TRAMS.

LOAN- PROPOSAL REVOKED. Per Press Association. PALMERSTON N„ March 20. A vote of ratepayers was taken today regarding the institution of electric trams. Last year a vote was carried in favour of raising a loan. Since then there has been strong agitation against the proposal, particularly on account of the inadequate route service and the necessity for an expensive tunnel under the railway line in'the Square. The poll to-day was tho result’of a petition lodged, against the proposal. The voting was as -follows;—Against the trams 654, for trams 501- ; majority against the trams 103. The result can lie interpreted to moan that tho majority of the ratepayers believe that Palmerston having no congested main arterial roads can be bettor served by a motor-bus system. It is not unlikely that a proposal for municipal buses will bo made if tho borough will allow the inauguration of such a system, about which there seems at present some doubt.
