HIGH SCHOOL BOARD.

MONTHLY MEETING. The usual meeting of the New Plymouth High School Board of Governors was held on Wednesday afternoon. Tho chairman (Mr. E. Dockrill) presided, and Messrs. Hi Eyre-Kenny, G. Grey, and IX Hutchen were also present.' Leave of absence was granted Dr. Eookcs and Messrs. W. N. Ewing and M. eraser. PRINCIPAL’S REPORT. Mr. W. H. Moyes reported that tho school work had been carried on as usual during the past month. Miss Cross, M.A., of Timaru, who was recently appointed science mistress of the Girls' School, took up her duties on March 10. The appointment of an extra teacher had made it passible to divide the third form of IS boys into two classes, which were now worked as 3a and 3fa.

Prospectus.—ln view of the fact that the last prospectus was out of date he would suggest that a new one be published before the end of tills term. Ho enclosed quotations for a prospectus similar to those issued by other schools in the hope that the hoard could see its way to incur bins expenditure. Science Apparatus.—He was in receipt of a letter from Griffin and Co., London, stating that a portion. of the science apparatus ordered in October last had not been forwarded. As this apparatus was urgently required, he would ask permission to e-stain it locally. He also begged to request:— (1) That top dressing of basic slag be obtained for the cricket ground. 'This, would cost about £3.

(2) That electric light be installed in the photographic room. The Camera Club had purchased •an expensive enlarging apparatus for the use of the members, and this could not be used until light was available. ■ The cost would be about £1 2s Cd. .(3) That some decision be arrived at with reference to the money disbursed to boarders. He would respectfully point out that he was still out of pocket from last year, and that with the number now in the house it would be a serious matter for him. if ho was not to have a refund of money advanced. (-1) That he be allowed to obtain a small supply of paint for one, of the class rooms. The walls jvcrc at present very unsightly, and-the hoys were anxious to paint them. (d) That two now barrows he obtained for tlic agricultural class. 11 if re were 20 boys in the class, and they had only one barrow with which to work.

The matter of issuing a’ new prospectus was referred to the chairman and Mr. Grey to confer with the Principal. Tlie hoard acceded to thy requests as above, and in reference to the practice of tho Principal advancing mone.l' to the ■" pupils, the chairman was empowered to confer with Mr. Moyes on the subject. ! REQUEST FROM THE OLD GIRLS. A deputation of seven ladies from tho Old Girls’ Association waited on the. board asking that duplicates of the present honours shields in tho Boys’ School be provided for the new Girls’ School when built. Aims E. Andrews -introduced the deputation, and Airs. J. E. Wilson briefly stated its mission. The deputationists did not urgently press the matter, but would like to see it given effect to as soon as it was convenient for the board to do so. Members were agreed that tho request was a very reasonable one, and thy board decided to procure duplicates of tho present shields to bo handed on to the Girls’ School when 'erected, MISCELLANEOUS. Air. Hutchen’s notice of motion that steps be taken to appoint a lady, principal at the Girls’ School from the commencement of next terra was, on the motion of Air. Eyre Kenny, adjourned sine die, until after the committee appointed had journeyed to Wellington to interview the Alinisier for Education on matters, of importance to the board. Leave was. granted Air, Hutchen to reintroduce the subject after this had been done. '

Miss Grant, headmistress of the Girls’ School, applied, for a cyclostyle for thepurpose of printing the. examination papers at the end of the terms. The cost would be £3 10s or less.—Granted.

Air. Al. Fraser, who is on'business in Christchurch, will endeavour to interview the department and lay before it the financial position of the board, especially with regard to the new Girls’ School.

Air. H. Wells’s offer for a renewal of his lease was deferred until a fuller meeting of the board.

Accounts amounting to £468 2s 2d were passed for payment.
