A cablegram from Rome states that the Pope has attended the first mass since his illness. Mr. and Mrs. Imlay Saunders and Mr. Gonville Saunders, of Wanganui, are up for the golf tournament, Mr. W. B. Colbock, of Auckland, has. also 'arrived. , )

At the meeting of the General Committee of the Taranaki Agricultural Society held on Tuesday night a resolution of sympathy was passed with Mr. and Airs. W. Bowley and family in their recent sad bereavement.

At the meeting of the Taranaki County Council on Wednesday afternoon a vote of sympathy with Mr. \\. Bewlcy in his recent very sad bereavement was passed. Sir. Bewloy was chairman of the council from 1893 to 1896.

An old resident of the Thames district died in Auckland last week in the person of Mr, Richard Aladden, ' Deceased was over 50 years in business in the mining township, where he was generally esteemed. He was a veteran of the Maori War, and in the early days experienced a great many of the vicissitudes attaching to the life of the pioneer colonists. The popular New Zealand actor, Air. Harry Roberts, is a stepson of the late Air. Madden, who had reached the age of 77 years.
