The following story is told in the Auckland Star ;—A purse was dropped by a lady on the platform at Auckland railway station, picked up by a porter, and found to contain about Ll2. The “find” was proclaimed on the platform, but the owner was not , found. Examining the contents, the porter found in it a sale note showing, that “Aire. —” had that day made a purchase at a .well-known city shop. He rang up the shop, got the lady’l address, and in his meal hour took'the tram to Ponsonby and restored the purse and money to the owner—incidentally going without his dinner. The lady graciously thanked him, and added: “By the way, I ought to pay your tram-fare—twopence each way.” She handed him a shilling and asked for,the change! Is it to be wondered at that a man so honest had not eightpence in his pocket?' The situation was embarrassing—it is hard to say which party felt most humiliated, but the tension was relieved by the generous lady saying: “Well, never mind the change.”
