A thousand labourers employed by tho city authorities struck tor higher wages, and paraded tho streets, intimidating other employees. The police interfered and disorderly scones resulted, followed by several arrests. COMPULSORY SERVICE. AUSTRALIAN CADETS FINED. One father claimed exemption on account of religious scruples, and quoted a clause in the constitution. The magistrate hold that he was dealing with tho Defence Act. Tho father gave notice of appeal.
