STRATFORD.

July 12.—Under the I .presidency of the Mayor, a meeting of the Town Band (was held last night.v The public had been specially'invited to attend, but were not largely represented. The secretary read a report on the work of the past year, from which it wtmld appear that there has'been the usual uphill struggle against the unkind Fat© thathas shadowed the Stratford Band for the whole of its twenty or more .years Of fitful activity. The latest blow is- the removal of the conductor to another district, just as he was bringing his raw material into shape.' On the hand, the band has now a practise-room of its own, and is riot liable to be bandied about ..from one piore or less unsuitable, 1 home to another. A new conductor has taken hold and looks forward with enthusiasm to giving the Stratford public some* good music in the parks this coming summer. , ' The Domain Board met to-day and granted the Stratford Tennis Club per•mission to lay down courts in Victoria • Park. It was decided to renovate and improve the suspension bridge leading to King Edward’s Park; and to plant a row of Lawsonianu on the Regan Street front of the same. , A discussion took place on the question of thinning-out and lopping. The difficulty of finding a roan with the necessary judgment wag realised, but it was decided that a policy of laisser faire would be more harmful than a • few blunders, so the axe, saw and bill-hook will be set to, work in the plantations. , This morning the S.M. dealt with the first cases of contumacy under the Defence Act that this district has afforded He gave the foolish hoys some good advice at a small charge, and Lieut. Cnrdale then took them out of his hands. No doubt they will come to their senses quickly enough, as are no 'silly fools here to organise processions for the glorification of shirkers.
