AN EXTENSIVE BUSINESS. The business of Jas. J. Niven and Go., Ltd., of Napier, a share in which is being offered to the public, is a very extensive one, as will be seen from the following list of contracts the company has in Hand at the present time; The Campbell and Ehronfried Co., Ltd., have just placed an order with Messrs. Jas. J. Niven and Co., Ltd., for a refrigerating and power plant, to be installed in their brewery at Auckland. The installation will consist of a “Linde” refrigerating plant capable of making 18 tons ot ice per 24 hours, driven by an 80 B.H.P. enclosed ventilated typo electric motor. The ammonia condenser will be of the “atmospheric'’ type, containing over 5000 feet of special ammonia tubing; it will he manufactured in Niven and Co’s Napier works where an extensive jilant is installed for this class of work. Mr. D. J. Barry also recently ordered from Messrs. Niven and Co. an 18 ton “Linde” refrigerating plant for the Gisborne brewery. It will be driven by a 70 B.H.P. “National” gas engine.

In addition to the foregoing, Messrs. Niven and Co. have, at the present time, the following contracts in hand; A complete two-cell “Sterling” refuse destructor plant for the Napier Borough Council. A. 55 B.H.P, "National” suction gas engine for -Messrs. Goodfellow, Ltd., Hamilton.

A complete electric lighting and power plant for the Hawke's Bay Hospital and Charitable Aid Board. A rock-drilling and power plant for Mr, A. P. Urey, Dunedin. A oo B.H.P. •‘National’’ suction gas engine a'nd producer plant, also a steel gas holder and tank tor the Acetone lllmmuatingand Welding Co., Ltd., Napier. A complete electric lighting and power plant fop the Wairoa Borough Council. , This installation comprises two 28 kilowatt electric generators with suitable switchboard and mains, etc., street reticulation, house connections, and n fire alarm, system; also two 48 B.H.l 1 . "National” gas engines, with suitable producer plants. ' A 26 B.U.P. '‘National” gas engine and producer plant for Messrs. C. L. Inncs and Co., of Hamilton. Two 60-inch Broadbents electrically driven hydro extractors and a "Petrie” wool dryer, capable of dealing with 500 lbs of wool per hour, for the South Otago Freezing Co., Ltd., Balclutha. A horizontal mnltibular marine tube boiler 6ft diameter by “ft 6in long, for the s.s. Wairoa, X’icton. A “0 B.H.P. "National" suction gas engine for. Messrs. Montgomery and Co., Christchurch. A pumping and power plant for the Pukekoho Town Board, comprising a three-throw horizontal ram type pump capable of delivering 9000 gallons of water per hour against a "head of 500 feet, driven by a 48 B.H.P. "National” suction gas engine. , The complete equipment of the freezing works now in' course 1 of erection at Whangarei, The main features of this installation are an 18 ton “Linde” refrigerating plant driven by a 55 B.H.P. "National” suction gas engine, a 30 kilowatt electric dynamo driven by a 48 B.H.P. "National” gas engine, a fellmongery and boiling down plant comprising a "Niven's” patent rotary manure dryer, capable of handling the offal of 700 sheep per day, two tallow digesters, two refiners, ,a combination, grinding, elevating screening and ■ bagging plant, also a complete electric lighting plant, etc. A 17 N.H.P. Brown and May stationary steam engine for Mr. H. Carlson’s sawmill at Owhango. A 25 B.H.P. "National” suction gas engine for Messrs. Russell and Bignell, Wanganui. A 6 N.H.P. Brown and May; portable steam engine for Mr. J. Milburn, of Waipawa. Five tallow digesters, each Oft diameter by 9ft Sin long, for Messrs. Nelson Bros., Ltd v Tomoana. A 33 B.H.P. “National” gas engine for Messrs. Dick and Flyger, Wanganui.

Messrs. Niven and Co. have just completed three installations of “National” gas engines and producer plants in Wellington, viz.; a 44 B.H.P. for Messrs. E. H. Crease’and Son., Ltd., jam and pickle manufacturers; a 36 B.H.P. for Mr. E. Colley, furniture manufacturer; and a 62 B.H.P. for the Wellington Cordage Co., Ltd. Electric ■lighting plants were also installed in Messrs. Crease and Colley’s establishments, and at the present time an extensive plant is being installed at the AVellington Gas Company’s works, at Miramar. It consists or two 36 and one 62 B.H.P. “National” gas engines, a compound wound electric generator, IdS amperes at 230 revolutions per minute, and two generators of tho same type, but 79 amperes at 260 revolutions' per minute, also a Gwynnc “Invincible” typo all-brass pressure pump, capable of delivering 10,000 gallons of water per hour against a head of 130 feet, driven by a 13 B.H.P. electric motor.

It is apparent that Messrs. Niven and Co. play ajvery important part in the engineering industry of the Dominion, and with such a substantial list of contracts in hand they are making an excellent start for the financial year just commencing.
