WAITARA.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) Anril 17.—Mr. W. F. Jenkins was res elected Mayor of Waitara to-day for a further term of office unopposed. The late Mrs. A. Cliff was a sister -of Messrs. W, and G. N. Skeltep of this district to whom much sympathy will be accorded in their bereavement. The following cargo was taken by, rthe Banffshire, which sailed for Wellington ou Tuesday: —4ooßqrs beef, 410 carcases mutton, 4708 carcases lamb, 1553 ‘ boxes frozen sundries, 1216 bales wool 402 casks tallow and pelts. _ Mr. 0. H. Tate, Town Clerk, is absent on Territorial duties at the Hawera camp. During bis absence, Mr. Uos. Buchanan is acting as locum tenons. The head officer of the police in this district (Inspector Wilson) was on an official visit to Waitara to-day. Miss Yd a Ward, the actress-evange-list’s decision to return to the stags (as per Sydnov cable) is not surprising. Professing Christians have always been remarkable for actions that are tho acme of uncliaritablcness, and Miss Ward is not the first one to find it out. The grasping, opportunistic spirit that seems'to characterise alleged followers of the humble Nazarene is one of the main causes that account for the indifference of the masses in religious m AVaitfira’s (and incidentally ; the district’s) future- was in great jeopardy quite recently, owing to the intention of a largo local enterprise to transfer the ramifications of their business elsewhere. The negotiations were almost completed, when a hitch occurred and the deal was off. It -was extremely fortunate for Waitara that it has turned out- so, otherwise it meant the shutting down of the present ..concern for three years. 'Pile above is another proof that one never knows what employers are thinking about. At the present time when things are dull, shopkeepers complaining of the scarcity of cash, and the property market glutted, such a -blow would have been an extremely nasty knock for Waitara.
