THE SPEAKER’S POWERS.
JUDGMENT OF HIGH COURT.
By Electric Tele-d-apb:—Copyright. SYDNEY, April 18,
The High Court dealt with the case • of Perry versus Speaker Willis, arising out of scenes in the Assembly in September, when Perry, after leaving the House, was brought back by the Speaker’s orders and admonished. Perry brought an action against the Speaker and Sergeant-at-Arms for 41000 damages for.assault. In the demurrer action following tho Supreme Court ruled that the Speaker<had no power to deal with a member once he ’ left the House. Mr. Willis appealedto the High Court, which unanimously dismissed the appeal. The Chief Justice, in delivering judgment, said the Speaker' had no more power over a member outside the House than over any other person. A disorderly person could be removed, but it was different thing to bring him back to the Chamber to make an example of him.
