ELEPHANT “IN CHANCERY,”
For four months the London Zoological Society has had tne (are Pi Sail.e, an elephant wluen was involved in u g.ii proceedings, blie hud lonned Ute uinjecl of a dispute, and, p-mnng us settlement, the court Migg,oi..d nut t .,it i :a d better be in the custody m seme neutral l»aH.v, and the "Zoo 1 authorities accordingly looked alter her. Last month Sadie's experience ol being "in Chancery,” or iu equivalent, ended, ami she left tho elephants’ house iu charge of three keepers "without a stain on her character.” She has been "chartered” by the Dublin “Zoo” lor tho coming season, and is expected to earn more than her keep and salary hy carrying some humlreu,-, of Irish children. Her departure tor the docks was almost spectacular. A keeper from the Dublin Zoological Gardens, who was an old friend of Sallie’s. welcomed her when she was released from her cage, and she exl ended her trunk to him for some edible token o! his affection. The duel of all tin “Zoo’s” elephant keepers caught her by the ear and led her out into the gardens. There she was mot by a pony-trap, whorr function it was to lead the way through the streets nf London—for Sallie has been trained to follow a vehicle obediently. Sallie behaved pretty well, but she loafed along too slowly, and insisted on answering the hoots, of the taxicabs by a noise resembling the sudden application of nhgreased brakes on a goods train. Sallie, though only about fourteen years old, has already made more than one trip to Ireland, and has also travelled with itinerant showmen. She is of a sweet though hungry disposition.
