In connection with the acquisition by the Royal Mail Steam Packet Company and Elder, Dempster and Co. of the ordinary shares of tho Union-'Castle line of steamers, the former company has been handed by Donald Cnrrio and Co. a cheque for over £5,000,000, said to be the second largest on record.
