Mr. and Mrs. T. Harle Giles are staying at Mona, Carrington Eoaid until Friday.

Mr. W. Kelly, Awakino, and Mr. J. Scott, manager for Mr. Battloy’s Awabino estate, are at present in town. At ihe meeting of the Land Board on Tuesday the following resolution was carried: “That this meeting heartily congratulates Mr. John Strauchon and Mr. James Mackenzie on their promotion to the offices of Under-Secretary for Lands and Surveyor-General respectively.” Both these gentlemen have been Commissioner of Lands here. Mr. Strauchon came here at a critical time in the history of land settlement in Taranaki, and the great administrative ability shown by him had tAuch to do with the successful settlement of some of our largest back country districts. Mr. Mackenzie was responsible for the opening up of the Taranaki portion of the King Country, which is a monument to his administration as Commissioner of Crown Lands in Taranaki. It was rteolvod that a copy of this resolution should be forwarded to each of the gentlemen referred to.
