Sir Allen Taylor hah resigned the Lord Mayoralty of Sydney, on the ground of ill-health. 1 Quartermaster F. W. Okey left by the mail train this morning for Hawera, to superintend arrangements in connection with the camp. At the Whiteloy Sunday School anniversary gathering on Monday night advantage was taken of the opportunity of extending a warm welcome to Mrs. Carter on her return from a visit to England. Inspector Cullen has been appointed Commissioner of Police. Mr. Jordan, chief cierk in the Justice Department, has been appointed Under-Secretary for Justice, iu succession to Mr. Waldograve.—Press Association. A Christchurch telegram states that Sir Joseph Ward passed through Christchurch this morning, and was welcomed by a large and thoroughly re prosentative gathering of citizens. He was warmly cheered and escorted to the railway station by a procession of motor cars and taxis. It is with regret w« record the death of Airs. Arthur Cliff, which occurred at New Plymouth this morning, after a short illness. Mrs. Cliff was well known throughout the district, and was very popular with all with whom she came in contact, and the announcement of her death will be received with general regret.
