SITTING AT NEW PLYMOUTH. CARPENTERS AND JOINERS’ DISPUTE. The Conciliation Council sat at tho Borough Council Chambers, Now Plymouth, M-day to hear the dispute of the Taranaki Master Builders’ Industrial Union of Employers and the New (Plymouth branch of the Amalgamated (Society of Carpenters and Joiners' Intrial Union of Employers and the New Harle Giles, Conciliation Commissioner for the northern and Taranaki industrial districts, presided, and the assessors were: For the muon, Ivor Hazcll and G. Blatherwiok, of Wellington, and C. D. Arnold, of New Plymouth; for the employers, W. F. Brooking, J. W. Boon and F, A. Coleman, all of New Plymouth. Air. Granted, secretary of the Employers’ Association, Wellington, appeared ror tho employers. THE MEN’S CLAIM. The claims of the union are to the effect that 47 hours shall constitute a week’s work ; minimum rate of wages to all journeymen carpenters and joiners, carpenters’ joiners, and wood turners Is bd per hour, and on ail outside jobs the man responsible for the carrying out of the work, i.e., has charge of tiie plans and gives instructions to other men, not less than Is extra, per day. Provision is made for underrate workers. With regard to overtime tho claim sots out that for the first two hours overtime shall bo paid at the rate of time and a quarter, after the first two hours aud until 10 p.m. time aud a half, between 10 p.m. and the recognised time of starting work next morning, if worked continuously, double time shall be paid. Clauses dealing with holidays, suburban work, and country work follow. Piece work is prohibited, and work shall not be sub-let labour only. With reference to apprentices it is provided that the number of apprentices shall be limited one to three journeymen or fraction of three, the term of apprenticeship to be five years. Preference is claimed for unionists, and the term of the award is -.to be for two years. THE COUNTER CLAIMS. Pica- work is prohibited except in respect to stair-building; work shall not he sublet. Preference to unionists is objected to. Tho term of the award to be three years. In e-rvly to tho Commissioner, tho assessors on both sides said they had full power to act on behalf of their respective parties.
