ENTERTAINMENTS.

“PIN0C0HI0.”

The Empire Picture,Palace was crowded on Saturday ahernOon and evening, when the management introduced the bright and original pantomime, “Pinoochio.” The picture is in a number of picturesque scenes, and is the pantomime pure and simple. The adventures of the wooden boy caused much amusement amongst the children, and also proved bright and interesting to the adults. Owing to other bookings the ‘ 'panto” cannot bo retained on the programme after to-night. Among the other pictures, “Captain Brand’s Wife” (by Selig) and “the Senorita’s Conquest” (by Lnbin) are two thrilling and exciting Western stories. A beautiful floral gem is “Rhododendron Culture,” the Pathe Gazette contains much interesting topical matter, and “Foolshead” provides refreshing comedy. On Wednesday next the Empire management introduce another great “star” attraction in the form of the drama made famous by Sir Henry Irving, “The Bells.” We might mention that the picture of “The Bella” has been made famous by the master elocutionist, Mr. Alf. Boothman. ROYAL PICTURES AND ORCHESTRA. ’ A large and appreciative house again greeted the Royal Pictures and Orchestra at the Theatre Royal on Saturday night. The programme was an admirable one and fully upheld the high standard for which the Royal Pictures have become noted. “The Great Moment” was the star attraction, this film occupying practically the whole of the second half of the programme. An outline of the story unfolded has already been published. The various scenes were followed with great interest. The picture is undoubtedly one of the finest that has ever been submitted here. In addition to “The Great Moment” there were a number of other excellent films all of which were heartily applauded. A beautifully coloured picture gave one an excellent idea of the difficulties that have to be overcome in exploring the islands. The film showing a sensitive plant was particularly instructive. There was a good sprinkling of comics which would make anyone laugh. SKATING. Followers of the favourite winter pastime of roller-skating, will welcome the news that Messrs. Lints and Lyttlo are re-opening the Glide-away rink at the Drill Hall. Last year’s sessions, Monday, Thursday and Saturday afternoons and evenings, will be followed, the opening day being fixed for Thursday next. All the skates have been thoroughly overhauled, and new ones are coming to hand. Arrangements are well forward for a successful opening on Thursday afternoon.
