(By “Recreation.”)

The Frankley Road-Westown Sports Committee were unfortunate in striking bad weather for its meeting on Easter Monday. There were only about 100 or 150 spectators, but these ivere given an excellent afternoon’s sport. The state of the weather had stopped many competitors from attending, but nevertheless -an average of about half-a-dozen faced the starter. The handicapping was excellent, the closeness of the finishes testifying to this. A pleasing addition to the afternoon’s entertainment was the horse leaping competition. The entries totalled about seven or eight, .and some fine .jumping was seen. The horses which filled the three places were ridden by boys, who discarded the aid of saddles. The committee had only fourteen members, including the popular secretary, Mr. A. C. and the hard work they must have been put to in getting up the meeting deserves the highest praise. It is, to be hoped that the committee will meet with better weather for their next sports meeting. The Arnst-Barry match for the championship of the world has been fixed tor July 29.

Referring to IV- Murray, who successfully attempted the world’s walking record for 3500 metres on March 23, “Harrier,”’ in the Australasian, says: Murray’s attack on Earner’s 3500-metre record was successful and was heartily applauded, but the asphalt track is not suitable for walking. This year the Olympic distance is 10,000 metres, Clover six miles. He has all the qualifications for success, hut the judges will be Swedes, and their ideas of what constitutes walking will have to he satisfied. It is unusual, if not unique,, to find a champion walker who also excels at running, hut Murray claims the tenmile running record also, and has won high . honours in cross-country and Marathon races.”
