FATAL FALL . FROM A GIG. Per Press Association. ’ ‘ ; April 12. James JReidy, aged about fifty, -a single man, fell from a gig and' died shortly afterwards. The wheel passed over him breaking seven of his ribs. A BLASTING ACCIDENT. TE KTJITI, ApdltL2. In a blasting accident near Waitomo Caves yesterday a • man named G. W, Hogan had a narrow escape of fatal' injury-.- ■ Owing to a- mishap'T/ith'. the fuse there was a premature explosion of powder, and Regan was ~ severely burnt on the face and bands. GISBORNE DROWNING CASE. GISBORNE, April IX. A man named Goatley, who has been employed as a wharf labourer,, is- missing from the Strand Cafe, where he Las been staying, and as it is known that he intended fishing this morning, it is almost certain that iwvwas the unknown victim of the drowning fatality at the groyne. Goatley is supposed to have come from Melbourne, and has been in Gisborne about five weeks. ! A MOTOR ACCIDENT. TIMARU, April IX. In order to avoid a collision with a gig ,af a. street 1 nuossjng .in. a quet part of the town this afternoon, the owner and driver turned a big motor car too sharply round .the corner, with the result that one of .the bind wheels collapsed, and the'car fell on its side, throwing, out the driver and' four or five young passengers. The car, nevertheless, hit the gig, - but behind, and threw it forward and capsized it. The driver of the car had a. collarbone and one or more ribs broken. His sister and Miss K. Ardagh, daughter of the proprietor of the Commercial Hotel, both suffered severely from concussion and bruises. The other occupants of the car escaped with scratches and braises. A man in the gig, Mr. P. Butler, struck the kerb with his head when he fell, and was cut about the face, and later showed signs of skull fracture. The ambulance men did good work before the doctors arrived in removing the patients, three of them to the hospital. A tall hedge at tho corner probably had something to do in bringing about the accident.
