A MAN MISSING, Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, April 10, Stanley J. Beattie, who left Manakau on Saturday to look for cattle, is missing. A search party is now out. Beattie took with him a dog and a gun, but very little food. THE DEFENCE ACT. AVELLINGTON, April 10. A deputation to the Trades and " our Conference this afternoon briefly discussed the Defence Act, and decided to set up a committee to act jointly with one from the Federation of Labour. After making inquiry the joint committee will report to the unity conference. AUCKLAND BETTING RAID. AUCKLAND, April 10. There was a big muster at the Police Court to-day of persons arrested in connection with the betting raid. The cases wore not called till latp in the afternoon, and were then adjourned until April 18. FLOODS AT EKETAHTJNA. EKETAHUNA, April 10. Hoary rain started last night and is still continuing. The rivers are in high flood, and much low-lying land ie> submerged. There is a probability that unless the rain soon stops, the damage will be severe. THE AVOOLLEN MILLS AWARD. WELLINGTON, April 11. The chairman of the Wellington Woollen Company states that the Arbitration Court award in the mill dispute is unlikely to have any serious effect on New Zealand’s woollen industry. Although some increases are granted, nothing like the original demands of the union have been given. PREFERENCE TO UNIONISTS. WELLINGTON, April 11. In reply to a deputation of timber workers, Air. Laurenson said he Supported statutory preference to unionists. THE SHEARERS’ CONFERENCE. AVELLINGTON, April 11. The Shearers’ Conference decided to establish a head office in AVellington not later than September 1.
