ATTEMPTED MURDER.
A CHRISTCHURCH TRAGEDY. Per Press Association,! CHRISTCHURCH, Dec. 18. This afternbbn a man named James Gibbons attempted to murder Mrs. Eliza M‘Kenzie, a married woman, living at 110 Queen .Street, Sydenham, by cutting her throat with a razor. Gibbons, who wag a lodger at the house, was resting in bis room while Mrs. M'Kenzjo and two fipends., were playing cards in the Mrs. M'Kenzio went through and invited Gibbons to come and have some dinner, when he .suddenly rose up, knocked her dowti, and prpdnoed a razor, .with which he inflicted a -wound in her throat. She screamed for help, and the others in the house, a married couple, came to her assistance and pulled the man aw.ay. Mrs. MTvenzie got up. and rushed to a neighbour’s house, where she was. followed by Gibbons, -who again attacked her and inflicted another wound on-her chin and hand. Gibbons? was tackled by a couple of men, thrust out intoitio yard, and finally knocked out. The police were sent for, and Gibbons after a struggle was taken into custody by Constable O’Connor. The woman is likely to recover, though the wounds she received are serious, the carotid artery being exposed - CHRISTCHURCH, Dec. 19. James Gibbons charged with the attempted liurder of Mrs. ’M'Kenzie was remanded to ‘December 27. Bail was not asked ..for.
