WAITARA.

(From Our Own Correspondent.)

'Dec. 18.—Air. J. D. Henry's report in connection with die petroleum, industry is a model in its way, and shows that, so tar as the expert is concerned, there is nothing of the • "wild cat" scheme likely to eventuate in the coming working of the oiliiekls at Aloturoa. Experts arc generally prone to be over sanguine, as some of us_ know to our cost, but Air. Henry, while being no pessimist, has weighed the pros and cons of the scheme in a most exhaustive manner. 1 doubt if a .more comprehensive, prudent and conscientious scheme has over been placed before the people of the Dominion. Shareholders, both big and small, should hang on to their Shares, for tlie future seems fraught with great possibilities for Now Plymouth, and incidentally too, ' cor whole of the Taranaki province. If this should meet the eyo of the Uev. Bates, Govorment meteorologist, a weather report according to the following sample would he gratefully received by the residents of Waitara and district; "Expect fine cloudless days; no wind.” This is the tenth week of excessive moisture, and there seems to be no indication of its abatement. It makes one envy the residents of Sydney and other sunny elimei. Speaking of Sydney reminds me that Afr. and Airs. T. Buxton, of Waitara, have recently returned from a trip to the other side. They both express themselves as delighted with their jaunt, stating that Sydney and Melbourne are "eye-openers” in ’ everything to the average New Zealander. Noticed recently that a Now Zealand girl had qualified as doctor of medicine. Surprising that more lady doctors arc not practising, as it is apparent that no one can understand feminine complaints like a woman herself, besides being more seemly in many eases, lint womenfolk are queer creatures, for no matter how friendly they appear with one another, .there is always a lurking feeling of distrust present, and tliis no doubt accounts for the present dearth of female medicos. Despite suffragettes, and the women’s franchise (which the late Air. Soddon admitted privately was one of the biggest mistakes of the Bailancc Government) the bulk of femininity are still very conservative in their ideas, and particularly so in matters medical.
