SWIMMING.

The annual meeting of the Stratford Amateur Swimming Club on Tuesday night was only fairly attended. Mr. E. B. Stohr occupied the chair The chairman, in his address, said the club might he congratulated on die success ot the previous season, which finished with a credit balance, despite tho lact that only one night carnival was hold, and that the club had incurred expenditure in installing electric light at the baths. There, had boon a number or visiting swimmers at the carnival, and they expressed themselves well pleased with tlic management of it, promising to return tlua .season to the club’s sports. Mr. Stohr also congratulated the club on having a very energetic secretary, to whom was due groat credit lor the success ol the season’s work. He moved the adoption ol tho report and balance-sheet. Mr. Kirkwood .seconded, and the motion was carried without discussion. Several new members were elected. Officers ior tho year were elected as follows; President, Dr. Carborry; vice-presidents, Messrs. E. B. Stohr, F. A. Tyrcr, J. F. IViltson, IV. P. 'Kirkwood, and D. J. Malone; committee, Messrs. Marlowe, Davy, D. Finlay, Whittington, C. S. Kell’v, and J. J. Staples; handicappors, Mr.' C. E. Scabright for open events and Mosers Scabright and Kivell for local events; starter, Mr. E. B. Stohr; timekeeper, Mr. J. I*'. Watson; auditor, Mr. C. Potts; secretary, Mr. Kivell; assistant secretary, Mr. G. Potts; delegate to centre, Mr. D. M'Farlane (Wanganui). An honorarium was granted to the secretary. The annual subscription was fixed at 2s 6d for the season. The secretary was instructed to ask the school committee for the use of tho baths on the same conditions as obtained last year (including the exclusive use of tho baths on alternate Thursdays from 3 p.m. to 7 p.ra.). Mr. P. Skoghmd was elected to represent tho club on tho School Baths Committee. On the motion of Mr. Kirkwood, seconded by Mr. Stohr,, a vote of thanks was accorded to Mr. R. H. Kivell, tho custodian at tho baths, for his courtesy at all times and his assistance at tho carnivals. Regret was expressed that the club’s finances did not allow of a more substantial recognition of his services. Tho opening of the Maramii Surf Club's (Wellington) season on Saturday afire loon was auecessful, and the weather was as good ns could he desired. A strong surf was on the beach, and the rescue work in the water and the drill On land was watched by a large number of spectators. Councillor Smith unfurled the flag, declaring the season open, and various exhibitions of physical and life-saving drill were afterwards given. T. S. Battershy won the English Quarter-mile Northern Championship at Seacombo in oniin. 30;see. This is 2 sec. heifer than Beaurepairc’s time for the same distance last year.
