NEW PLYMOUTH HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.

A GREAT SUCCESS. j The attendances during both the afternoon and evening at the New Plymouth Horticultural Society’s annual I spring show yesterday were well up to < xpectations. Altogether it can bo vouchsafed without the slightest doubt L nat the I'Jll 'show can be chronicled as the most successful irom every point of view that the society has experienced. . The president (Mr. G. H. M’Gahey) and the secretary (Mr. A. L. Humphries) are to be heartily congratulated on their achievement. They had with them a most energetic lot of stewards, and particularly painstaking and conscientious judges. A now system of judging the decorative classes was instituted at this show. Bach of the three judges was given a card with instructions, and was to walk round the exhibits independently and make notes, giving marks as they thought lit. The cards were then handed to the secretary and so the result was i decided on the points awarded. The ' system worked admirably, in nearly every case tho verdict being unanimous. Jt is safe to say that in every section tho results wore greeted with entire satisfaction —an encouragement to both old and future exhibitors. The vegetable section, which was not completely judged iill late in tho afternoon, was tho strongest feature of the show. The judges expressed great satisfaction at both the quality and quantity of the exhibits. Both worn much ahead of last year’s, especially in the potato and collection classes. The potatoes wore especially good, as also wore the cauliilowers. BALANCE OF AWARDS. The following is the, prize lint of the vegetable and fruit sections;— VEGETABLES (OPEN). Asparagus, 10 stalks.
