A number of Chinese storekeepers were charged at tho Magistrate’s Court with employing shop assistants after 9 o’clock on Saturday night. It was--'stat-ed that there was a wholesale defiance of the law by the Chinese, but the Chinese Consul had undertaken to have the law explained to storekeepers. The fines inflicted ranged from 20s to 40s. DESERTING SAILORS. WELLINGTON, Dec. Mo. The Remuera sailed for London today. She was delayed 24 hours through some of the crew deserting. The deserters had to be-replaced by men who will be paid £4O for the trip Home, tho usual amount being £7 10s. A RAROTONGAN CASE. - - AUCKLAND, Dec. 15. News from Rarotonga reports that a native woman named Rongomate was shot dead on December 3. Her husband, Noongo, was arrested on suspicion, and at "the inquiry conducted .by the. medical officer, the jury found that;; wasTcauscd by a gunshot wound received •■‘in the house, none' being present except deceased and her husband.. , There was no direct evidence as to whether tho gun was discharged accidentally or intentionally. UNCUSTOMED GOODS. AUCKLAND, Dec. 15. In tho Police Court William H. Walker, third officer of tho Morayshire, was charged with having cigars, tobacco, and a pair of ladies’ boots, uncustomed goods, in his possession, and fined £27, three times the value of the goods, the fine being reduced to £3.
