WAITARA BOROUGH COUNCIL.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) At the usual monthly meeting of the above council there were present; His Worship the Mayor (Mr. \V. F. Jenkins), Councillors Black, Brabant, Birdlmg, Jilenneiy Laugman, Rattenbury and Tate. CORRESPONDENCE. From Mr. E. C. Jones, requesting permission to erect a small shop in Ogle Street in iron instead of brick.— : Permission granted. From the Engineer, reporting that the earth work m Monaco Street had been completed on the permanent grade, and metalling would commence this week. The suggestions of tho engineer as to the completion of Manakonhi Hill, High, Raleigh and Crafcroft Streets were adopted. In connection with the road to the Recreation Ground the engineer stated that the cost would run into about £4 los per foot for part of the distance, and about £3 per foot for the balance.—Tho Mayor said he did not think the council could afford the largo expense entailed in sheath piling, which it was contended was necessary.—-The matter was, -hold over in the meantime. From the Premier as follows: “Ro memorial for old settlers’ cemetery, Waitara: With regard to your letter of the 10th inst., covering communication from the Town Clerk, Waitara, asking for a grant towards the erection of the above memorial, I find that tho sum of £43 10s was expended by the Lands Department in July, 1909, in fencing and improving tiro cemetery in question, but if tho inhabitants of Waitara will let me know’ what amount they can raise by private subscription towards tho erection of a monument, the same as was done in New Plymouth, I will endeavour to grant a £ for £ subsidy, in tho general vote for cemeteries for the purpose referred to.—Mr. Jennings had suggested at the time that a concert might be arranged to raise funds for the purpose.—Councillor Braha ll’ thought tho best thilig to do was to send out subscription lists throughout the district. He was of opinion that all the old soldiers would willingly make a donation to perpetuate the memory of their old comrades in arms. He moved that subscription lists be circulated.—Councillor Tate suggested a public meeting be called, and a committee formed. Matters had' dragged on so long that it was very disappointing, and it was also a reproach to the borough of Waitara and a disgrace to the residents.—Councillor Eattenhury said lie did not think that the movement would meet with. much success unless the townspeople took it up first. —Councillor Kleimer was strongly of the opinion that a concert should be hold. The public of Waitara were noted for their liberality in a good cause, and he was sure that such a function would be a great success, and would not prevent a subscription list from being handsomely supported.— The motion to call a public. meeting was carried. From the Engineer, suborning bis report on the drainage of tho Jovvn. From the secretary of the Stratford Chamber of Commerce re the Saturday half-holiday.—lt was resolved that the Mayor ho instructed to arrange for a proxy to vote for the Saturday halfholiday. From the secretary of the Waitara Fire Brigade, asking for permission to use part of Domett Street for fire practice, etc.—Permission granted. WAITARA TOWN HALL. Councillor Brabant mentioned that he was in Elthani recently, and was of the opinion that a similar hall to that of Elthani was what was required in Waitara. The building cost in wood was £4OOO. He had been promised by tho Elthani Town Clerk that their plans and specifications would be sent on for perusal. WAITARA BRIDGE. The Premier wired qsking that consideration be given to New Zealand manufactured material in connection with the new bridge. It was explained that the contract was lot before the telegram camo to hand. It was further agreed to wait on the Clifton County Council at its next meeting to discuss the council's contribution to the cost of the bridge. Councillor Brabant made a complaint as to tho manner in which stock was allowed to wander about the streets, and also to the manner in which tho stable-keepers drove their horses through the town. Other councillors agreed that it was time active steps were taken to deal with thc*e. matters. BOROUGH SOLICITOR. Councillor Brabant brought up the matter of the, appointment of a borough solicitor. Mr. Stead had asked him to bring the matter up. H-' understood that other councillors bad been approached in the matter also. Xn action was taken, Councillor Ratten bury opining" that at the present time they'had in the person of Mr. Rov one of the very best men in local body work in the Dominion to look after their interests. Mr. Longman complained of a deposit of nightsoil on • a section in Waitara East, in close proximity to several residences. —The Clerk said lie would acquaint the contractor, of the matter. Accounts were passed for payment, and tho council rose.
