A NEW SHIRE LINER. Messrs. Turnbull, Martin and Co., managers for the Scottish Shire Liners (Ltd. i. report that thejr largo new liner Argyllshire ran a highly successful trial trip on tho Clyde on June 30. Built by Messrs. John Brown and Co., Clydebank, this fine steamer, of 1-1,000 tons register, has been specially designed to meet all requirements for the trade between Australian ports and Manchester, and to that oiict her five pole masts and large single funnel are each tele-

scopic to enable the vessel tf* negotiate the Manchester ship canal with the utmost despatch. She is fitted with all the latest appliances for the expeditious handling of cargo, and her midship hatch is fitted with winches and booms designed to lift 50 tons deadweight in or out of the hold. In addition to her large cargo-carrying capacity. the Argyllshire has first-class accommodation amidships for 130 saloon passenfers, and can also carry 300 steerage passengers. During her trial trip, using steam from five out of her six large boilers, the vessel attained a speed of 14.9 knots, with her refrigerating machinery all working at its fullest capacity', and her builders anticipate that she will he capable of maintaining a .speed of about .14 knots under ordinary soa-going conditions when fully loaded. This fine vessel marks the advent of a new type, specially designed to meet all the requirements of the colonial-West of England trade, and is another tribute to the ever increasing requirements of our overseas trade.
