TRAMWAY REGULATIONS.

GOVERNMENT PROPOSALS CONDEMNED. Per Press Association. WANGANUI, July 15. Tljo Mayor of Wanganui, interviewed concerning the tramway regulations, spoke strongly against them, and expressed the opinion that such far-reach-ing proposals should only be made by Act of Parliament and not on the sole responsibility of the Minister for Public Works/ 'They took too much power out of the -hands of local bodies, who were just as capable as the Government of seeing that tho system was properly run and that the employees and the public were fairly treated. In case the regulations were enforced in Wanganui a huge deficit would bo created, which wpuld probably have to be mot by increasing the fares, while it would be ruinous to the suburban districts of Gouvxlle and Wanganui East, which were...ifistalling trams and paying to the borough at per car mil© for power. The Mayor of Wanganui East .and the chairman of tho Gonville Tramway Board concur, and say that the regulations would be absolutely disastrous to their services, and people would be unable to bear the extra burden'entailed. The chairman of the Gonville Board says that the regulations will’prohibit the installation of trams in the smallot towns which at present are considering the question. .
