THE WANGANUI BAND.

WELCOMED IN MELBOURNE. By Electric Telegraph. —Copyright MELBOURNE. Oct. 26. Tho I/ord Mayor officially received the Wanganui Garrison Band at tho Town Hail, and extended on behalf of the citizens of Melbourne a cordial welcome. He congratulated them on tho great honour of winning tho Australasian championship. He was delighted to think that a small town in a sister Dominion displayed such pluck and enterprise by sending a band such a long distance at such expense. They might feel proud of no mean honour. In New Zealand the band hud an unbeaten record for eight years, and now they added fresh and greater laurels, not only in music but in inarching. It was most, creditable to Now Zealand, and to Wanganui in particular. The visit of the Now Zealanders, ho said, was another evidence of the fine spirit which had prompted the Dominion to take a prominent part in tho past in important Imperial questions. Mr. Muir, the manager, replied on behalf of tho band. An organ recital was specially arranged for tho band in the Town Hall this afternoon. Tho adjudicator in the Ballarat contest, Mr. Shortt, said the leading bands in tho competition would hold their own with any band in Groat Britain. Ho had never heard Code, tho champion cornotist, equalled.
