CPUNAKE.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) Oct. 22. A mild sensation was caused in the town on Friday by a horso that had been left standing in a dray, unattended, bolting, and, taking a liking to the footpath knocked down two or three verandah posts before having his career finally stopped, partly by some bystanders and partly through lack of momentum caused by the numerous obstacles encountered. Tbo Hirnii arrived early on Sunday morning and discharged a quantity of cargo. The sea was rather rough, however, and a stiff breeze was blowing, at times causing the vessel to drag her anchor. Shipping facilities at Opunako aro bad at any time, hut it would ho expected that the Northern Steam Ship Company would at least keep its agent advised of intended visits. On the previous visit of the Rimu to this port, however, it was not the case. For some days nobody had seemed to know when the vessel was due or where it was, opinions varying from “on the slips” to “on a trip to Hokianga.” A private firm, however, getting anxious, wired the company direct, and got the unexpected reply back that the Rimu had cleared Ouohuuga and was due at Opunakc in a few hours. The local agent was then rung up, and was found to be still in ignorance of the vessel’s whereabouts. A public mooting was hold in the Town Hall on Thursday evening for fho purpose of forming a society for the advancement of Opunako and the improvement and advertisement of its attractions as a slimmer holiday resort. The meeting was unanimous that something should he done, though opinions differed rather widely as to the form it should take. However, it was finally decided to form a society and to canvass the town for subscriptions, the first improvements to take the form of better bathing facilities, sheds, etc. .MV. Holmes was elected secretary and Mr. Brennan treasurer. Over £2O was guaranteed in the room.
