A PARACHUTE DESCENT. Per Press Association. NAPIER, Oct. 23. A balloon ascent was made froqi tho Recreation Ground on Saturday, when the aeronaut, C. J. Sehphe, ascended to a height oi 2250 foot, as registered by an aneroid. On his descent by parachute he landed on top of the chronic ward of the Napier Hospital, smashing four oi the root tiles. 'The only injury lie sustained was a slight graze on one of his knees. ANGLICAN MISSION. CHRISTCHURCH, Oct. 23. Tho Anglican General Mission started in earnest last night, when services in the city and suburban churches were well attended, and the exhortations of tho missionors attentively listened to. While cutting scrub in the vicinity of tho Mauakau River, on Thursday, a bushmau found a human skeleton, near which lay a leather wallet and remnants of clothing. The remains were subsequently taken to Otaki. They arc lielieved to be those of Ponapa Ihaka, who disappeared four years ago, his brother having committed suicide a few days previously. Parkos, of Feilding, yesterday picked up at the mouth ot the Rangitikei River a bottle containing a paper issued by tho Commonwealth Meteorological Bureau, and stating it was dropped at sea as follows:—S.S. Manuka, April 13, 1910, noon, latitude S. 44 degrees 46 minutes, longitude E. 156 degrees 22 minutes; state of wind, hard gale W.S.W.; heavy sea. The ship was going from tho Bluff to Hobart, and the bottle was thrown overboard by F: R. Gamble, second officer. The paper has been dispatched to the Commonwealth Meteorologist. MAORI LANDS SOLD. AUCKLAND, Oct. 24. There is a report here that Rua, the Xfrewera prophet, has received from the Government agent for some 90,000 to 100,000 acres of land no less than £69,000. Rua has since had big buying orders placed in Auckland, has arranged for the erection of a dozen houses at his settlement, Kuatere, and purchased 200 head of cattle, _ carts, horses, and implements. It is also stated that Rua has ten other blocks for sale. ALLEGED INDECENT ASSAULT. MASTERTON, Oct. 24. A man named John Taylor has been arrested on a change of indecent assault on a girl aged 8. Ho was remanded for a week, bail being allowed in his own recognisance for £25 and two sureties of £25 each.. AN ALLEGED WELSHER. WELLINGTON, Oct. 24. As a sequel to an incident on the racecourse at Trentham on Saturday, Victor M'Duff, a young man, was brought before tho police court to-day on four informations of theft and one of obscene language. It is alleged that ho obtained a license' to act as a bookmaker under false representations and did not settle up with Ins clients. It was stated m evidence that accused acted similarly at Whangarei.. Tho case was partly heard and adjourned till Wednesday.
