NOCTURNAL RESIDENT.

(To the Editor.)

Sir,—Judging from his letters, Mr. R. J. Matthews is a man of small, very small, ideas. He compares Fitzroy with New Plymouth, and talks of their splendid roads, and how well the work has been done. he kindly tell us how many bridges they have built and what public works they have undertaken. Why, they have done nothing in which it was possible to make mistakes. Where do they got their water supplv from, and their electric light? As a New Plymouth ratepayer, I say let them go on their own, by all moans. Cut off their water supply and lot the proposed tramways run from tho Breakwater to the eastern borough boundary, only. The fact is the suburban areas have been too well treated by the New Plymouth borough, and it is time that tho water and electrical services wore put on a more businesslike and equitable footing,—l am, etc., RATEPAYER. (To the Editor.) Sir, Judging from Mr. R. J. Mauncws’ letter, you evidently, in your leader of the lotli, toucheu him on the raw, m spite oi his attempts to appear to the contrary. No one who Knows him could imagine him wnting a short letter, or that he could by any ellort be progressive. However, i don’t think it is fair to be too hard in your criticisms. What can you expect from a man who has been stuck in a little country township for the last thirty years? It is only to bo expected that he should bo limited in perspective. At the same time, it is only fair to say that even Waitara has become progressive and gone in iqr a loan for water supply, etc., since R.J.M. left it to reside in New Plymouth.—l am, etc., LUX.
