A CORRECTION.

Sir, —Permit me to correct a mistake which’ crept into my letter in AVcdnestlay’s issue of the Herald. In writing of the relative numbers of students attending universities in England and Spain; the word hundreds _ appeared instead of thousands.' The United Estates Commissioner stated the number of student* in Snanish universities as 16,000, and in England tho number was soraowliat less' than 10,000. Hhe mistake was not ours.—Ed. T.K.] Mulhnll stated that the number of university students in Spain surpassed almost that of l any, other country ini,Europe. Ihe Statistical Society’s Journal gives olio in one hundred ami ninety as the pro-portion-of criminals to total population in England and Wale*. \\ bother this statement is* correct or i not 1 cannot say, - hut accuracy is to be expected from such iv* source. Tho extract* nppeaml in tho columns of an influential and •v> idoly-ciroulated Liverpool vveoklv, and has not boon controverted, or even questioned in subsequent number*. Tho excerpt from the London limes, which asserted that nil tho educated classes ii) Spain support the present Government, I knew to ho contrary to fact. Tho Madrid correspondent ot the Daily Telegraph gives world-wicio publicity to tW great work that the religious orders, both of men and women, arc doing, and have doucs, for tho spread of education in Spain, whilst ho ncjds, tho anti-clericuls have paid no attention whatever to educational Work.
