THE DAVIS CUP: Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, Sept.’ 28. Mr. G, A. Hurley, secretary of.the Now Zealand Lawn Tennis Association, received advice yesterday from tho Australian Tenuis Association that England had withdrawn from the international tennis competition. In consequence of this there will bo; no contest lor the Davis Cup this year, America having previously announced her intention of not taking part this year. TARANAKI ASSOCIATION. The annual mooting of the Taranaki Lawn Tennis Association was hold last evening, when there were present: Messrs. F. S. Johns (in tho chair), J. O. Nicholson, W. 11. ; Broome, F. J. Easthor, H, Stocker, and J. Paton. REPORT AND BALANCE SHEET. . Tho annual report and balance sheet, which was adopted, showed a credit balance of £l7 2s Id; which was considered exceedingly satisfactory. There are now fitteon clubs belonging to the association, being an increase of:threc. Slazonger balls will be used at tho annual championship tournament. Miss Powdrell again! won the New Zealand ladies’ championship, and tho association has every reason to bo proud of her. Miss Powdrell also won the Now South Wales championship, on tho occasion of her representing New Zealand against Australia. The i annual: interprovincial contest between Auckland and Taranaki was played at Auckland, and resulted in a victory for Auckland. It had boon resolved to play, the intorprovinoial match against Auckland on tho third Saturday in February in future. A movement - was > started last year to have -a aeries of iiitor-clnb matches arranged amongst the Taranaki clubs.: If this is gone on with a round should bo played off early in December. The report concludes: “It was with sincere regrot that wo received notice of tho resignation of Mr. 6. N. Goldie as secretary of the Now Zealand Lawn Tennis Association, The services of Mr. Goldie have always been of great assistance to tho association.” OFFICERS. Tho following officers wore elected for - tho ensuing year:—President, Dr. 11. B. Leathern (re-elected); vice-presi-dents, the presidents oi tho affiliated clubs; secretary and treasurer, Mr. J. Paton (ro-oiccted) ; auditor, Mr, W. C.Woston (re-elected). GENERAL. It was decided that Messrs. Weir, Hume, Young, l Swanson; and Donniston be ro-appointod the association’s delegates on tho Now Zealand Association. The question of the association’s representation on the Now Zealand Association was fully discussed. Eventually it was decided to leave tho matter in tho hands of a sub-committee consisting of Messrs. J. Paton, 11. Stocker, anS F. S. Johns.
