TE KUITI-AWAKINO ROAD.

It is satisfactory to learn, as wo do from the King Country Chronicle, that the work of metalling the Te Kuiti-Awakino Road at the northern end is jn-ogressing favourably. Some delay occurred on account of the Public AVorks Department desiring the local body of the district first to undertake the work with tho assistance of a subsidy, and then, when that was declined, to undertake to administer tho spending of the Parliamentary vote. This also being declined the department decided to spelld the vote itself, and instructed Mr. Murray, the engineer in charge of the district, to put the work in band. This was done without a moment’s loss of time, day labour being emjiloyed, because to have invited tenders would have caused delay, and probably have been fruitless, because contractors at this season of tho year are not very ready to enter into contracts at reasonable prices. A staff of twenty men was placed on the work within a day or two of the instructions being received, and metalling was proceeding in a very short time as fast as the drays obtainable could cart the stone from tho crusher. A first-class job is being made of the road, the Chronicle says, but the want of drays is a drawback, and tho crushing plant is not situated at the best possible site. To have shifted it, however, would have caused delay, and at this advanced stage of the season time is tho essence: of the contract. Given a fine autumn a considerable length of road will bo metalled, ranch to tire comfort of settlers in the district.
