H.M.S. PEGASUS.

ARRIVAL AT NEW PLYMOUTH. Tho H.M.S. Pegasus arrived off the Breakwater, Now Plymouth, shortly after 8 o’clock this morning and will remain here over Wednesday. She is a twin screw protected third-class cruiser attached to the Australian squadron. Her tonnage is 2135, and her horsepower 5000. She has a speed of thirty knots and carries sixteen guns, eight of which aro 4in, and eight three pounders. The officers and men of tho vessel number about 200, all of whom aro Imperialists. Tho officers aro as follows: Commander, Arthur 11. C. C. Homo; Lkmtonaiit, (0) Edward H. F. Boughoy, Roy Bacchus, (N) 11. Lyttelton Haslowood, Charles P. Stow; Eng. Com., Victor do Paris; Eng. Lieut., George C. P. Simmons; Staff Puym., Philip B. Stevens; Surgeon, Arthur D. C. Cummins; Sub-Lieut., Nigel C. Westell; Gunner, Arthur Brown; Carpenter, Ernest E. Bush; Clerk, Arthur W. M'llwuino. The- Pegasus is due to return to Aucktelegraphic installation of an ordinary radius of 200 miles during the day and 400 miles at night, but she has spoken as far as 900 miles. AVhilst at Gisborne recently sho was in communication with H.M.S. Challenger, at Auckland. Tho vessel draws sixteen feet of water. The Pegasus is due to return o Auckland on tho 19th inst. to be present on the arrival of tho flag ship in Auckland harbour. During the morning the Pegasus stood off several miles from the shore and had battle practice, 04 rounds of 4-inch shells being discharged. Subsequently tho Pegasus came in closer, but is now standing out only a few chains from the end of tho breakwater. This afternoon his Worship the Mayor (Mr. G. Tisch), the Town Clerk (Mr. P. T. Bellringer), Colonel E. N. L. Okoy (Officer Commanding the Taranaki Battalion of Volunteers), Captain Mills (of the Taranaki Guards and hon. secretary of tho Taranaki Branch of tho Navy League), Colonel Ellis (vice-president of the Veterans’ Association), Mr, C. Carter (chairman of the Taranaki Petroleum Company), Mr. A. L. Humphries (secretary of tho Seaside Improvement Committee), Mr. H. T. Joll, and two pressmen paid a visit to tho war ship, and were received in the Commander’s quarters. A hearty welcome was extended to tho officers and men, and the Mayor promised that everything possible would be done to make their .stay in Now Plymouth as enjoyable as possible. Commander Homo acknowledged the welcome, and whilst the party accepted of his hospitality tho arrangements that have been made to entertain tho officers and men Were discussed. Tho visitors then returned to shore to await the arrival of tho commander and officers. En route to town, the oil works of the Taranaki Petroleum Company wore visited, and on arrival in New Plymouth a public reception was held at the Kia Ora Tea Rooms, for which function tho Mayor had issued a large number of invitations to tho leading citizens. A triangular riflo match is taking piano at Rowa Rcwa range this afternoon between teams representing tho Pegasus, the Taranaki Rifles and the Taranaki Guards. To-night the officers will ho tho guests of the local branch of the Navy League, whilst the men will bo entertained at the Drill Hall by the local volunteers. About 50 or 60 men will come ashore. To-morrow tho public will be allowed to visit the war ship from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and again on Wednesday. At 2.45 members of tbo Veterans’ Association will visit the ship, also tho children connected with tho local branch of tho Navy League. Part of tho deck will be cleared during the visit of the veterans, who will fall in for inspection by the commander. * Tho _Potoitoi has been chartered by tho Seaside Improvement Committee to convoy visitors to and from tho ship, A charge of Is will bo made for adults and 6d for children.
