Mr. and Mrs. Maynard Ramson. Whakatano, are spending a few days in New Plymouth. Mr. F. Gillanders, late manager of the Moumahaki experimental farm, left Wanganui on Wednesday en route for Sydney. ;

The goodwill of the Milton Mirror has been purchased by the proprietors of the Bruce Herald, and Mr. C. L. Grant, late proprietor of the Mirror, joins the staff of the Herald in the meantime.

Mr. H. Brett, of Auckland, is expected to arrive home on Wednesday morning by the P. and O. vessel Malwa. Mr. Brett will -receive a presentation from the citizens of Auckland' on the 17 th inst, ,1

Mr. R. Mill, who Was for some time accountant of the Dunedin branch of j the Bank of New Zealand, and until recently has been relieving accountant in Christchurch, has been appointed accountant in the Wellington branch, in succession to Mr. J. H. Mentiplay, whose appointment as relieving manager has been announced. Mr. Robert Underwood died on Sunday at the Christchurch Hospital. He was well known in theatrical circles, having carried on business in Christchurch as a theatrical agent for the past twenty-five years. Prior to his arrival in Christchurch he acted as manager of Balling’s Hotel, Dunedin, for some years. Ho was advance agent for Pollard’s Lilliputian Opera Company when it made its first tour of New Zealand over twenty years ago. The death is announced of Mr. Abraham M'Kenzie, at the age of 72 years. The deceased had resided in Southland for many years, and during the greater part of the period was engaged in farming pursuits in a small way at Oteraraika. He acted as dog tax collector for the Southland County Council for a number of years. Mr. M'Kenzio, who was a bachelor, was a staunch Orangeman, and seldom, if ever, failed to attend gatherings of the Invercargill Lodge.

Writing under date December 31 the London correspondent of the Wellington Post says:— 1L A whole list of names has been mentioned of gentlemen who are to be appointed to succeed Lora Plunket in the Governorship of New Zealand. Admiral Sir Wilmot Fawkes and even Baron Fisher (the late hirst Sea Lord of the Admiralty) have been suggested. In reply to a question, Lord Crewe has informed me that as no appointment has yet been made he cannot confirm or deny any of the reports.” Mr. T. IT. Roydhouse, editor-in-chief of the Sunday Times, Eeferee, and Arrow Sydney, will bo a visitor to New Zealand this month. Mr. Roydhouse, as originator of the Boy Scout movement in Australia, and a member of the controlling body, will note the progress of the work in this country so far as his stay (confined to the North Island) will allow. Being one of., the promoters and executive of the Aerial League of Australia, which now has sections m everv State of the Commonwealth, he will inquire as to the prospects of the proposed section in New Zealand, turd afford any information required. He is also a member of the Council of the British Empire League, and is authorised to represent that body here in promoting a branch of the parent league, which has its head office in London, if conditions appear favourable. Mr. Roydhouse will reach Auckland by the P and 0. steamer Mahva oh February 16, and will later visit Wellington. Dr. Stanley Brown, senior house surgeon at the Wellington Hospital, tendered his resignation to the hoard a day or two ago, stating that he intended leaving for Homo shortly, to study the higher branches of his profession. The trustees accepted the resignation with regret. The vacancy on the staff is to"bo filled by the promotion of Dr. Simpson, intermediate house surgeon, to the position of senior house surgeon, and the elevation of Dr. Foster from the position of junior house surgeon to that of intermediate house surgeon. Dr. Randall Woodhouse, of Dunedin, was appointed to the position of junior house surgeon. Dr. Woodhouse is a young mail of 24, and has had a brilliant career at the Otago University. The matter of the appointment of an assistant surgeon in the opthalmic ward was mentioned by the chairman, who said that ho had discussed the question with Dr. Hardwicko Smith, medical superintendent at the hospital, and the latter had given it as his opinion that it would be unwise to make such an appointment at present.
