LABOUR CONVENTION.

MR. KEIR HARDIE’S ADDRESS. “TOYING WITH DEMOCRACY.” LORDS’ ABOLITION DEMANDED. By Electric Telegraph.—Copvright. LONDON, Feb. 10. Tho German Social Democratic Party telegraphed fraternal greetings to the Newport Labour Conference and congratulations on' their success at the polls, despite the naval scare. Mr. Keir Hardio, chairman, in his address, said he did not pretend to be satisfied with tho result of tho elections. Ho explained that the Irish National League of Britain had ordered tho Irish vote in three-cornered contests to be given to Liberals. It was unlikely that Home Rule would be secured while the heads of the Irish organisation bludgeoned down the Labour candidates. Tho Labour Party must maintain complete freedom of action in tho House of Commons and the constituencies. The treatment' meted to the Labour candidates during tho election was not of a kind to predispose them towards undue friendly relationship with tho Liberals. Tho talk about weakening tho veto of tho Lords was toying with democracy. Ho demanded the abolition of the Second Chamber. BEN TILLETT CAUSES A SCENE. CALLING NAMES. (Received Fob. 11, 8.40 a.m.) LONDON, Feb. 18. Mr. Ben Tillett caused a scene at tho Labour Conference by accusing Mr. Henderson of blackguardism and complaining that tho Labour leaders supported Mr. Moud’s 'candidature at Swansea. He added that Mr. Mond deliberately attempted to bribe him (Tillett). ’
