BALVATION ARMY.

OPENING OF THE BOYS' HOME.

The non-arrival in Eltham of his Excellency the Governor proved a very great disappointment to the Salvation Army officers, though it was fully recognised that the circumstances which prevented him coming to Eltham were entirely beyond his Excellency's control. However, tho cerempny of opening the Home was duly proceeded with, the Hon. W. Carncross being deputed the privilege of declaring the Home duly opened (reports the Eltham Argus). Theje was a large assemblage of people present and it was quite evident that had the Governor been here, there would have been a big turnout of. the people. The ceremony was commenced by the singing; of, one of the Army gongs, folio* ,by a prayer by Major Stone and an address by Colonel Knight. His Worship the Mayor, Mr. Parrott, then gaye a speech in whioh he eulogised the work of the Army and spoke, specially concerning the opening of the Home. Brigadier Bray, gave some interesting details concerning the aims ahd object* of the Home, and was followed by Envoy Jenkins, the donor of the Home to the Army, who* concluded his interesting speech by presenting the deeds of the property to Colonel Knight. ; The H.on. W. Carncroes then gaye a short address in which he made kindly reference to the late Mrs. Jonkins, her desire to do some good and lasting work, and the loyal manner in which her husband had carried out her desires by the erection of the beautiful. Home they were that day opening. Afterwards the key was turned in the door and the Home declared to be officially opened. Crowds of people then streamed through the bunding and . surprise and deliaht were expressed by everyone at the completeness and comfort of the institution. We have no doubt but that many hundreds of people of Eltham will shortly pay visits of inspection, and we are sure they will be delighted with all they see.
