Maloner, of the staff of the local telegraph office «nd the inventor of a long-distance, telephone transmitter. kiKiwn as the "tnndom looseback, left to day for Sydney en route b.V tho Orient steamer Osterley for England r The transmitter is a device constructed on the principle of the human ear, and it is claimed for it that by its means long-distance telephoning is greatly facilitated, and for ordinary use conversations can be carried on in whispers by persons using the telephones in ciowded rooms where others are talking. It is Mr. Mnloncy's intention when in England to aacortain whether or not his invention has been forestalled, and, if not, to place it on the European market, -v Mr. Maloncy is also taking to Europe n fire-alarm indicator known us the Maloney-Ross fire alarm. John Ross, of the' Christchurch telegraph office, vhe ;s; s eopatontco with Mr. Malonov of the telephone transmitter, intends leaving for the United States in about six weeks' time in order to place the invention before representatives of the telephone companies in that country.
