The committee had decided to hold sports on the coming New Year's Day but then, learning of the desire to hold the picnic again, his committee had decided that very evening not to proceed with their function it the people wanted to hold the picnic. Hie Sports Ground Committee was not going to interfere with them, and, further, wbb prepared to assist in every way. Ihey would hold a function, of course, for they were hard pressed for funds, and he hoped the people would remember that they had again given up their date in the interests ot the place. The Mayor announced that the Swimming Club would probably hold a sports meeting during Christmas week, either ni the baths or in the Recreation (.rounds. He expressed his appreciation of the Sports Ground Committee's public-spmted action. Mr. C. E. Bellringer said they would all appreciate the action of the committee, ho trusted that when the Sports Ground Committee announced a function the public would remember the public-spirited action which Mr.Humphries had just announced. Mr. Sandford moved that the picnic be held on New Year's Day. He remarked that he had learned from those interested in education that last year's picnic had proved of great value to the children, and a source of great enjoyment. Mr. J. Morey seconded. In the discussion which followed, the Mayor pointed out in reply to Mr Standish that this year it would be difficult to arrange a series ot functions in the Christmas week. Christmas Day fell upon a Saturday. The r«f«}»k i .lockey Club's races would be held on Monday and Tuesday. Then :ne town would on Saturday close for New Year's Day, and the shopkeepers would hardly be likely to close between Tuesday and Saturday. Ot course there might be a holiday on Monday, January 3. Mr. Baker thought there was almost sure to be a holiday on the Monday. Mr. Bellringer and Mr. Am bury were of the contrary opinion, but felt that if there were surh a holiday the committee should provide some programme for that day. The motion was carried. Mr. Carter moved a very hearty vote of thanks to the Sorts' Committee for the magnanimous offer, entailing considerable sacrifice. Mr. C. E. Bellringer seconded, and the motion was carried by acclamation. The meeting pledged itself by resolution to assist the Sports Ground Committee when they hold their, function in aid of their funds. It was decided that the sea side picnic at Now Plymouth be an annual affair. It was also decided, upon the Mayor's suggestion, to co-operate with the Navy League in endeavouring to have a wai ship stationed at New Plymouth during February. The meeting approved a suggestion by Mr. Amhury that upon that occasion a great naval demonstration should lie arranged by the committee, nnv profit!to be handed to the Recreation Sports Ground Committee. ANNIVERSARY DAY. The Mayor announced that Hie com- .
