Merriman, Premier of Cape Colony, replying to a deputation from the Chamber of Commerce, said he hesitated to increase the number of lights on the Cape coast fearing that they might stimulate reckless nayi T gation. He left some months ago for Durban, and letters # received by his friends indicated his intention of .going on to England by a steamer leaving "towards the end of July," which was about the time the Waratah' left Durban. His last letters were received a month ago, since which time there has been no .further word from him. t
