We very much regret to have to record the death of Mr. George Neweil, a member of the liuotype operating staff of this paper. Though uot a robust man, there was nothing in his condition up to yesterday to cause any anxiety. In met, ho was at work as, usual on Thursday last, but not feeling lit yesterday morning he did not come to work, though even then no alarm was felt. In the evening, however, he collapsed and about halt-past eight his heart tailed and he passed away. He waa born in 1856 aiid when about ten years old he was put to learn the printing trade in the Taranaki Herald Office. About twenty years later he went to Auckland, joining the staff ol the Star, where he was one of the first linotype operators. In February ot 1907 he rejoined this paper when linotypes were installed, and continued to operate right up to Thursday. He iiad a thorough knowledge of bis trade and was an expert operator of the linotype. To these qualifications he added an exceedingly obliging disposition and absolute loyalty to his employer. His loss will be keenly felt in the office as well as by his iamily, with niiom we desire to express the most sincere sympathy. The New Plymouth Harbour Board at its monthly meeting yesterday passed a resolution expressing appreciation ot the services of Mr. S. Hill whilst in the position of district valuer and regretting that he is retrenched from the service. At .Christchurch yesterday several Consular representatives met Mr. Yung Liang Hwang at the invitation of the Mayor, when the Chinese Consul-Gen-eral's health was honoured and complimentary speeches made. Thornton, headmaster of Te Aute College, was entertained at dinner on Friday by the Old Boys of the Col-1 lege. The Hon. A. T. Ngata presided, and among the guests were Mr. Justice Cooper, Dr. Buck, M.P., and Dr. Pomare. The chairman presented Mr. Thornton with an autograph album and a substantial cheque on behalf of the old boys. The chairman eulogised Mr. Thornton's work on behalf of the education of the Maori race. Speeches in a similar strain were also made by Mr. Justice Cooper and Dr. Buck. —Press telegram. Appreciative reference was made at the harbour board meeting yesterday to the services rendered by Miss llennell, who severs her connection with the clerical staff at the end of the month. It was decided on the motion of the chairman and Mr. Maxwell to place on record the board's appreciation ot the. excellent services rendered by Misb Rennell. Mr. M'Cluggage endorsed the remarks of tho chairman and Mr. Maxwell. Mr. King said he never met with such courtesy and businesslike attention in any office as he had Irom Miss Rennell. The board granted Miss Rennell a bonus of 25 guineas. The Venerable Archdeacon Towgood luib resigned both the Archdeaconry of Wanganui and the cure of Marton. The Archdeaconry has been divided into two portions, the northern comprising all that part of the diocese that lies north of Marton with the exception of the difctricts through which tlie Main Trunk line passes, the southern comprising tho.se districts, Mnrton and the remaining part ot the area which formed the. old Archdeaconry. To the northern Archdeaconry the Bishop has appointed the Rev. J. A. Jacob, M.A., vicar of Christ Church, Wanganui; to the southern Archdeaconry tlie Rev, C. C. Harper. M.A.. vicar ot Pahnerston North. The Rev. V. 11. Kiteat has been appointed to succeed the Venerable Archdeacon Towgood as vicar of Marton. Archdeacon Towgood was born at Newport, MoiimouHihhire. in 1841, and educated at Sherborne (Dorsetshire), St. John's, Oxford, and Cuddesdon Theological College. He \v«s orduined deneou in Exeter Cathedral in IS6O, and priest in Wellington Pro-Cnthedral (N.Z.) in i 1873. In 18G6-7 he was curate in charge ' ot Springrove and Waimea West, Nelson. The following year lie became vicar of St. Stephen's, Mnrton, and was appointed Archdeacon of Wanganui in 1893.
