' Mr. F. S. Canning, of Hawera, was in town to-day. • Tho Hon. Oliver Samuel, M.L.C., and Mrs. Samuel arrived in Welling- ■ ton to-day from Sydney, and are ex* ; pected home -to-morrow night. I Rev. T. G. Brooke left New Ply1 mouth by the mail train this morning for Inglewood. He also visits Stratford, ! Eltham and Hawera, staying over Sunday at Hawera. ' ' Mr. R. H. Turton, who has been appointed stipendiary magistrate for the Wairarapa consequent on the death of Mr. W. P. James, S.M., will take up his new duties this week. The acting-Prime Minister (Hon. J. Carroll) expects to leave Wellington 1 some tune tnis week to attend a Maori ' gathering to be held in his honour at Parewanui, near Bulls. Maoris of the ' Wanganui and Rotorua districts, also 1 desiring to congratulate the acting-, Prime Minister on his promotion, have invited him to be present at a similar ! gathering, but the hon. gentleman, has not yet arranged the northern trip.
