WELLINGTON. July 24. ] Regarding tlie calilo r<'i>orunn t)ie { meeting in London of meat importers, the Minister for Industries and Commerce said to the .Tost reporter: "I have been through that before ; that was about 1898, whon thero was a collapso in values. The chief holders of meat arranged to soil -at a fixed prico and the market was broken by a certain man in Smithfield under-selling, and that selling was not done with his own meat, but that which was consigned to me." Regarding advertising, Mr. Mackenzie said it was well known that New Zealand meat was well advertised by the Government and others, and already well distributed, and tho causes leading to depressed valuos could not be remedied by spending £5000 as suggested.
