CASES AT WELLINGTON.

Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, May 28. Tho adourneil cases against two bookmaiiers. Jas. Ham . and Win. Ham, charged with street betting, Avere further'investigated before Air. Itiddell, S.AL, to-day. Chief Detective Broberg conducted the prosecution, and Mr. Al'Grath defended. James Ham was charged on two informations of using Willis Street for bookmaking purposes on- April 27. .lames Roid, a coal worker* gave evraeuco that he worked for defendant. and generally received his pay in. Willis Street. He had borrowed money on occasions from defendant. Witness was not a betting man and had never had a bet in his life. George Wilson, fireman in the employ of tho tramway powerhouse, said he knew defendant. Ho also borrowed money from him and had repaid the money in Willis Street near the Empire Hotel. John Carolin, a coal worker, stated ho also depended upon defendant on occasions for an occupation. Defendant had lent him money in the vicinity of the Empire Hotel. Witness did not back horses with money. If witness received work from defendant, he, was usually paid in Willis Street. Mr. M'Grath intimated that he had three other wharf labourers as witnesses who had been called back to their luties. urged that a legitimate reason had been given why deFendant should have been, in Willis Street. Defendant was an employer of .a hour, and acted on behalf of the (Vestport Coal Company. Counsel subivfcted that the case should not be pre.uUeed because defendant would not be ?aHed to givo evidence. He^was of ndiced because defendant would not be •efo^nised at a distance.
