A CANADIAN SUGGESTION.

THE NEW ZEALAND* OFFER

By Electric Telegraph. — Copyright. OTTAWA, Ma} 28.

Sir Jas. Whitney, Premier of Ontario, speaking at Morrisburg, said it would bo better it' the Canadian Guvernmon.t cabled to the Old Country that it was prepared to recommend the appropriation of the price of one or two Dreadnoughts. Canada, lie said, would be proud of the day wJjen it stood beside its brethren of the Antipodes in the great Imperial procession. THE PREMIER GOING HOME. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, May 28. The assurances of support received by the Government from members vi both brandies of the Legislature are so satisfactory and definite as to make it now quite certain that bir Joseph Ward will leavo for the imperial Conference v/ith the support of an overwhelming majority of both Houses. The suggestion that anyone else than the Primo Minister should represent New Zealand is not jSeriously entertained at present by Ministerial supporters. Sir Joseph Ward has already said that 'the invitation lias been addressed to himself, and that it is botli cordial in terms and urgent in character. The conference has been postponed in order that he may be present, and, as he himself has put it, the application takes such a shape as to make its acceptance a duty. In regard to the status of our representative at the conference, it is understood that the feeling of the Government is that the representation in England, to be of any use, must bo through a man who, while he cannot finally commit the country, still will be able to commit th& country in so far a& to stake not only his political existence but also the existence- of his Government to any proposals of which he approves. It is understood that one of the results of the conference will be that the Dreadnought offer will, with the approval of the Imperial Government, be placed on a basis satisfactory to Great Britain and which will be a businesslike one on the part of the dominion.
