IN THE HOUR OF DANGER

The Minister of Home Affairs, depending on Mr. Fisher's naval defence proposals, advocated abandoning the naval subsidy and initiating our own defence on the ocean, because a spirit of self-reliance cannot co-exist with the spirit of dependence, because we have no control over the ships subsidised, and because in the event of war the Australian squadron will leave our seas unprotected. The subsidy, he declared, will bleed Australia of millions and leave us unprotected in the" hour of danger^
