QUICK WORK.

A NEW PHINTING MACHINE

Yo-tPi<l.iv wo wero alilo to print the H<i.il'l ;i)j;:hm on our own premises, ;i new ]>iintil)j4 lnnclmie hu\ mj4 l>een elected in .i teinpor.'iiy huilrim^ on the south side (if the hi irk pi onuses housing on i c oninieK ml, htoraiy. linotype, and coniposinjr-rooin departments. The print ni}r niachine, which is a new double royal Wharfedale, by Payne, of Otley, reached Wellington on board the Ataiva from London on Sunday, April 18, tho day following the fire which destroyed our printing plant. The propi ietor of the Herald was fortunate enough to secure this machine from Messrs. Cowan and Hons, tho makers' agents in Wellington, who promptly interviewed the Shaw-Savill and Union Companies with a view of getting quick despatch. Thanks to their efforts the greater part of the machine was discharged from the Arawa in time to catch the Kini, which left Wellington for New Plymouth on Wednesday, April 21, one case only being shut out, and that oarao on by railway, tho Department kindly arranging for tlie waggon containing it to conic right through w ithout delay. Owing to the heavy rain on Thursday Jnst the Kini amis unable* to discharge her cargo until Friday, and it was not until that afternoon that the New Zealand Kxpress Company was able to deliver the seven cases, weighing nearly five tons, in the temporary machine-room erected in very quick time by Mr. A. Cliff. Tho eighth case was delivered on Saturday morning. Our machine-room staff had in tho meantime been busy unpacking and cleaning parts of the machine, and by Monday they had it erected, rollers cast, and everything ready for the power. Messrs. Griffiths and Son wore entrusted with tho installation of an electric motor and electric light, which was completed on Monday night and inspected and passed by Mr. Black, the borough electrical engineer, early on Tuesday morning. Connection with tho borough mains was made without loss of time, and by midday on Tuesday tho machine was* ready to print tho first sheets of this week's Budget. Yesterday the Herald was printed on it, and everything ran smoothly. Considering that tho building was not com- ! mencod until Monday, the 19th' inst., and that the machine was not wholly discharged from the Arawa until Wednesday, the 21st, we think we are entitled to claim something of a record in being able to print our weekly on the 27th and the Herald on the 28th. Of course, it has only been possible to do this with the hearty co-operation of all parties concerned — the shipping companies, the Railway Department, the Express Company, Mr. Sanderson (the archtteot), Mr. Cliff, Messrs. Griffiths and Co., Mr. Black, and not less by the very loyal work of onr on n staff. Again we have to thank Mr. List, the proprietor of our morning contemporary, for "helping a lame dog pver a diffionlt stile." Also we must again ask the indulgence of onr readers and advertisers for a few months until we can obtain machinery to print an eight-page paper and fitting accommodation for it in new brick premises. No unnecessary time will be lost in carrying this out. The site of the new building, which will he in brick and an exact duplicate, as far as the front elevation is concerned, of that in which vro write, is being cleared as quickly as posjiblo; Messrs. Sanderson and Griffiths havo plans and specifications in hand, so tli;,t tenders n ill bp invited very shortly, ami we expect in a fewdays t'» cable an ordor Home for ono oftha most modern printing machines the ex.v^t type of which, lowever, has not yet been finally settled.
