A BLAZE AT PALMERSTON.

FURNITURE WAREHOUSE DESTROYED.

PALMERSTON N., April 28. Shortly before fnidnight last night a fire broke out in- Malcolm's furnishing warehouse in the, Square^ starting in a workshop at the' back where there wat a large quantity of tow and varnish. For some time the blaze was confined to one corner of the building, but columns of black smoke rising from the roof told the hold the flames had within. , The brigade commenced operations from the rear, and although at one time it looked as if the fire would spread, the brigadesmen managed tt confine the flames to Malcolm's premises. These were practically destroyed at the rear, the frontage being less damaged. The whole stock, valued at £4000 war seriously injured by fire and water. The brigade worked bard and well, but it was not till about 1 a.m. that the fire was" extinguished. The building belonged to Mr Childs of the Commercial Hotel, who had only recently acquired it. The structure is insured for £750 in the Alliance and the stock ia insured for £1850 and £50C in the New Zealand, Norwich Union and Standard Offices, and £350 in the Alliance.
