ROYAL ARTILLERY.

Mr. Archibald Hood, late Sergeant in the Royal Artillery, acted on behalf of this ancient and honourable branch of the service, and unveiled this' hatchment. Mr Hood took part in a lot of hard fighting in the Crimea war, and was recommended for the Victoria Cross for distinguished valour in the trenches before Sebastopol, but owing to the death of two of the captains c-f his battery, no official evidence was forthcoming to back up the Recommendation. He was, however, offered a commission at the close of the campaign in the Turkish Horse Artillery, but declined this for one in the Telegraphic Service of the same country. Coming to New Zealand in 1861, he was attached to the Army Supply Department, and taking his discharge here, has remained in New Plymouth since, a highly respected citizen of the town.
